人若没有见过世面，没有经过事，没有跌倒过，往往不会真问人生。 少年时问“为什么”，多半带着聪明气；青年时问“为什么”，常常带着不甘；唯有被生活摔过、被疾病折磨过、被爱情背叛过、被异国的风吹冷过，再低头问一句“人为什么活着”，那声音才会从胸腔深处出来，像夜里井底的一点回声。 信德常常这样想。 他本是学哲学的人，年轻时读书，心里有一种清高的饥饿。叔本华让他看见意志之苦，觉得人生仿佛一条无尽的欲望河，人越挣扎，越被欲望拖着走；尼采让他看见强力、超越和孤独的光，仿佛人必须在废墟上给自己立法；黑格尔又像一座宏大的殿堂，把历史、精神、理性、国家、自由都纳入一套庞大而庄严的逻辑。那些年，他在书桌前常常读到深夜，纸页翻过去，窗外城市灯火一盏盏灭，他却觉得自己正站在思想的高峰上，俯视人间。 可是后来，人生不是一页页书，而是一刀刀现实。 他在澳洲病倒，溃疡性结肠炎反复折磨，腹痛、便血、虚弱、恐惧，把他的身体一点点拉回最卑微的层面。人可以谈自由意志，可以谈超人，可以谈绝对精神，可一旦蹲在医院厕所里，看着血色从身体里流出，便会明白，肉身不是哲学的注脚，而是命运最先落笔的地方。病好以后，他再读叔本华，才真正懂得“苦”不是概念；再读尼采，才知道强者也有病榻；再读黑格尔，才觉得那宏大的理性并不能替一个夜里腹痛的人煎一碗药。 李红的离开，又在他心里开了另一道伤口。 她不是恶人，却做了伤人的事；他不是圣人，却终于没有用恨把她绑住。那场分离以后，信德常常在Chatswood夜里醒来，听火车从远处驶过，铁轨声穿过窗缝，像命运在黑暗中拖动锁链。他问自己，爱情是什么？人为什么会背叛？贫穷、身份、孤独、欲望，究竟是外缘，还是人性本身的一部分？若一个人是被环境推着走的，那她还有多少责任？若责任仍在，又如何宽恕？ 这些问题，西方哲学给过他语言，却没有给他安顿。 他也一度靠近基督教。 Campsie的那家华人教会，离火车站不远。冬天傍晚，教堂窗里透出暖黄的光，里面有人唱诗，声音柔和，像远方母亲在呼唤漂泊的孩子。信德曾几次进去坐在后排，后来成为他们的信众，听牧师讲罪、救赎、爱与永生。那些词对一个异国伤心人很有力量。人若承认自己有罪，便不必再强撑完美；人若相信有人替自己承担，便可以把沉重暂时放下。教友们也热情，有人请他吃饭，有人递给他《圣经》，有人问他愿不愿意参加查经班。 他差一点受洗。 那时他想，也许人生不能只靠思辨，终究需要信仰。可是每到最后一步，他心里总有一处过不去。他感谢基督教给他的温暖，却仍无法完全把自己交给一个外在的绝对主宰。他在祷告中会安静，却也会疑问：若苦难是试炼，何以有些人苦到无声？若救赎在神恩，人的自省、自净、自修又放在哪里？他不是抗拒神，而是他的心还在寻一条更细、更内在、更能解释因果与身心的路。 结肠炎之后，他成了素食者。 起初只是为了身体。哥哥仁德在京都给他治病时，反复叮嘱他少油腻、少辛辣、少冷饮，养脾胃，护肠道。回到澳洲后，信德慢慢戒了肉。开始很难，街边烧鸭、牛肉粉、汉堡的气味总能勾起旧习；后来身体清淡了，反倒觉得胃里安稳，夜里也少些烦躁。再后来，素食不只是饮食，而像一种对生命的重新感受。他看见超市冷柜里的肉，会想起那曾是动物的身体；看见餐馆后厨处理鱼虾，会莫名生出一点不忍。人病过，才知道身体脆弱；自己怕痛，便容易想到万物也怕痛。 那一年初秋的一个下午，他闲来无事，去了Chatswood图书馆。 图书馆不大，却安静。玻璃窗外是华人区寻常街景：超市推车、烧腊店招牌、过马路的老人、背书包的学生。室内有空调的凉意，书架之间飘着纸张、旧书和木头的气味。信德原本只是想借几本英文小说，顺便翻翻哲学书。走到中文资料区时，他看见一排不起眼的录像带和书籍，封面多是一个老法师，面容清癯，眼神慈和，穿着僧衣，题目有《认识佛教》《地藏经讲记》《无量寿经讲记》《了凡四训讲解》《佛说十善业道经》。 净心长老。 信德从前听母亲赵幽兰提过这名字。赵幽兰信佛，年轻时常去乾州崇天寺，也曾在家里放过一些讲经录音。那时信德年少，只觉得佛教是香火、寺庙、木鱼和母亲嘴里的“阿弥陀佛”。后来他学西方哲学，更觉得佛教属于传统民间信仰，温柔有余，哲理未必严密。如今在澳洲图书馆的角落里，看见这些书和录像带，心里却像被一根旧线轻轻牵了一下。 他随手翻开一本《认识佛教》。 开头并不玄奇，也不劝人烧香求福，而是讲佛教是佛陀对九法界众生至善圆满的教育，讲“佛”是觉悟，讲迷与觉，讲因果，讲戒定慧，讲看破放下，讲人生苦从贪嗔痴来。信德站在书架前，本来只想翻几页，却不知不觉看了很久。 他又拿起一盒录像带。 那是老式VHS，封面已有些旧，像被许多华人借过、归还过、又借走过。图书馆管理员见他抱了几盒，笑着说：“这些带子很久了，不过还有人借。你家里有录像机吗？” 信德想起住处里房东留下的一台旧机器，点头说有。…
