Fantasy Novel: *The Paradise Inn
I. First Arrival at Lake Lucerne
**1**
A dark blue SUV slowly came to a stop beside Lake Lucerne, sunlight casting scattered reflections across the car windows. Lin Xiaoyang pushed open the door and stepped onto the ground covered with fallen leaves. The soles of his shoes lightly crushed several dry, yellow leaves, producing a faint rustling sound.
He looked around. The lake shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the distant range of snow-capped mountains and the colorful wooden houses scattered neatly along the lakeshore. Several swans glided leisurely across the water, their white feathers gleaming in the sunlight. On the benches along the lake, some people held thick books and read carefully, while other visitors sat close together, admiring the beautiful lake and mountain scenery.
Lin Xiaoyang walked to the bulletin board and scanned the wide variety of advertisements until a pale yellow note caught his attention—
“Paradise Inn, a self-service inn for artists and other creative professionals. Quiet surroundings, reasonable rates, twenty Swiss francs a week...”
He read it aloud in a low voice, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly.
“Only twenty francs a week? Much cheaper than staying in a motel...”
He reached out and tore off a strip containing the phone number. His fingertip accidentally touched the edge of another advertisement beside it, causing the paper to sway gently. He stared at the note for several seconds. After confirming the address, he turned and returned to the car.
The SUV traveled along the road around the lake. The red maple trees on both sides looked like flames, gently swaying in the breeze. Between the shadows of the trees, rectangular flower beds bloomed with flowers of various colors—red, yellow, and purple blending together like a painting.
Pedestrians along the roadside strolled leisurely. Some walked side by side, talking quietly; others walked their dogs along the lakeside path. Young men and women riding bicycles moved back and forth among them, the silver ringing of bicycle bells rising and falling one after another.
Under a patch of shade, a family sat around a picnic mat. The parents were cutting cheese and French bread, while the children chased a fluffy little golden puppy nearby, their laughter as clear as silver bells. On a hammock beside them, a silver-haired elderly man sat with his eyes half closed, gently rocking in the woven hammock and enjoying the lakeside breeze and the quiet afternoon.
**2**
Lin Xiaoyang drove slowly along the road around the lake. In the distance, Lake Lucerne shimmered, the sunlight dancing across its surface like silk sprinkled with gold dust. Tall mahogany trees stood in rows along the lakeshore, their interwoven branches and leaves casting mottled shadows. Following the sign, he turned onto an inconspicuous side road and drove down a small slope.
Rows of old trees stood on both sides of the road, their thick trunks like witnesses to history. Some of them must have been more than two hundred years old. A gentle breeze passed through, making the leaves rustle. Sunlight filtered through gaps in the branches and leaves, falling across the vehicle and creating patches of alternating light and shadow.
“This place...” He slowed down and murmured to himself, “This should be the estate of the nobility back then, right?”
As the car approached the lakeshore, a small wooden pier appeared on the left. Three or four small yachts were quietly moored there, their white sails gently swaying in the wind. On the right, a castle-like inn was hidden deep among the trees. Its red brick walls were covered with lush green vines, and several Gothic pointed-arch windows reflected the lake and mountain scenery, giving the place a classical and mysterious appearance.
Lin Xiaoyang parked the car in the small parking lot in front of the inn. After turning off the engine, he pushed open the door and stepped onto the gravel path, which made a faint crunching sound beneath his feet. He walked around to the passenger side, took out his suitcase, and slowly made his way toward the entrance of the inn.
An elaborately carved wrought-iron archway welcomed visitors. Beyond the gate was a colorful garden where violets, roses, and lavender bloomed together, filling the air with a faint floral fragrance. More than a dozen marble statues were scattered throughout the garden. Each one was carved so vividly that they seemed like works of art frozen in time.
He quickened his pace, followed the garden path, pushed open the heavy mahogany doors, and stepped into the inn’s high-ceilinged lobby.
The front desk stood on the right side of the lobby, while an open-air café occupied the left. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows was a direct view of the lake, overlooking much of Lake Lucerne. At that moment, only two or three white travelers were chatting in the café. Their low voices mingled with the soft hum of the coffee machine as it slowly brewed coffee.
The front desk was a heavy mahogany counter with a warm, rich color, its edges showing the marks left by years of wear and polishing. Standing behind the counter was an elderly man with a full head of silver hair. He wore gold-rimmed glasses and was flipping through a book with a yellowed cover.
Lin Xiaoyang walked up, set down his luggage, and cleared his throat.
“I’d like to rent a room.”
The old man looked up and smiled faintly. He closed the book, took out a registration form, and slid it toward Lin Xiaoyang.
“Please fill out this form.”
Lin Xiaoyang pulled a fountain pen from his jacket pocket, leaned over the counter, and quickly filled in his name, passport number, length of stay, and other information. When he finished, he handed the form back to the old man.
The old man took the form, looked it over, and nodded. He then took an antique bronze-colored key from a drawer and handed it to Lin Xiaoyang.
“This is your room key, Room 504.”
“Danke.” Lin Xiaoyang smiled faintly, accepted the key, picked up his luggage, and walked toward the stairs.
The inn’s spiral staircase featured an exquisite European design. The carved handrail had a warm wooden sheen, and with every step, the red carpet beneath his feet gave a slight springy response.
When he reached the fifth floor and found Room 504, the sky had already begun to take on a faint golden hue. He inserted the key and gently turned it. The lock clicked open. The moment he pushed open the door, the room’s motion-sensor light automatically came on, and a soft, warm yellow glow filled the entire room.
Then, a melodious violin piece slowly flowed through the room. The winding melody and familiar notes gently stirred his heart—it was Mozart’s Violin Concerto. At that moment, he seemed to find himself in an eighteenth-century Viennese music salon.
He gently exhaled and walked into the room. It was spacious and elegant, with a large oil painting hanging on the wall. The painting depicted an outdoor concert. Three or four elegantly dressed aristocratic ladies sat upright on wooden chairs, surrounded by several gentlemen in impeccably tailored suits, while the orchestra consisted of six or seven musicians dressed in tailcoats. In the background were a fountain and an outdoor concert stage in the square.
Lin Xiaoyang walked closer, his eyes falling on the signature in the lower right corner of the painting. His gaze tightened slightly.
“Huang Lihua.”
He frowned and murmured, “That name... Chinese?”
He raised his head and looked outside the window. Through the light coffee-colored floor-to-ceiling windows, he could overlook the inn’s courtyard. The entire building was arranged in a square shape around the courtyard. The central plaza was paved with red bricks, and an outdoor concert stage stood in the middle. Beside it was a fountain, its clear streams of water sparkling with a faint golden glow in the setting sun.
The first floor had a long corridor. Flower beds surrounded the plaza, while lush green vines climbed upward along the corridor railings, blending perfectly with the scenery outside the windows.
Lin Xiaoyang leaned against the window, his eyes resting on the surface of the lake. In the distance, Lake Lucerne was gently shrouded in mist, resembling a dream.
He said softly, “This really is a good place for writing.”
After saying this, he slowly sat down in the high-backed wooden armchair beside the window. Leaning against the back of the chair, he gradually let his mind drift away with the movement of the lake.
A faint scent of lilies filled the air.
In the corner of the study stood a black grand piano. In the vase on the piano stand, freshly replaced lilies were blooming brightly. The inn’s music continued to flow softly through the room.
Lin Xiaoyang closed his eyes and briefly sank into his memories...
In the backyard of Lin Xiaoyang’s home, Xiaoyang had an argument with his girlfriend, Xie Huijun.
Xie Huijun said emotionally, “Heaven knows it’s true. My parents have never looked down on you because your family isn’t well-off. They just want you to take over my father’s business. They never asked you to marry into my family. Why do you always assume the worst?”
Lin Xiaoyang said unhappily, “I don’t like anyone arranging my life for me. If I had known from the beginning that you were a wealthy heiress, I would have known better than to stay.”
Xie Huijun said angrily, “You’re really impossible to reason with! Do you think I’m trying to hurt you? There’s only my younger sister and me in my family. My father hopes that his future son-in-law can take over his business. That’s only natural!”
Lin Xiaoyang stubbornly said, “Anyway, I don’t like this kind of marriage with strings attached.”
Xie Huijun said, “Why have you become so stubborn and so difficult to communicate with? Fine! I’ll go to Europe to clear my head. When you’ve thought things through, send me an email.”
Xie Huijun grabbed her handbag and turned away without looking back...
Lin Xiaoyang brought his gaze back, took out his laptop, turned on the screen, and stared at it as he murmured to himself, “Huijun, where in the world are you?”
**3**
Lin Xiaoyang rode his bicycle slowly along the bike path beside the road around the lake, with his cell phone and digital camera in his waist pouch. Under the afternoon sunlight, the surface of the lake shimmered brightly. Occasionally, a swan glided leisurely across the water, leaving trails of ripples behind. The plane trees on both sides of the road cast mottled shadows, and the fresh scent of the lake filled the air.
He stopped beside a pier where several elegant white yachts were moored. Small Swiss and French flags fluttered from their masts. Farther behind them stood a row of magnificent hotel buildings. Their classical European facades were decorated with carved balconies and bronze wall lamps, radiating the quiet dignity of age.
In the center of the pier, a blond young man stood beside a black violin case, playing a melodious violin piece. The music was as light as the breeze across the lake, attracting more than a dozen tourists who stopped to listen. The young man played smoothly, with a faint melancholy in his music that made people unconsciously become immersed in it. When the melody ended, the onlookers dropped small-denomination bills into the hat at his feet one after another. Lin Xiaoyang also took out a one-euro bill and placed it in the hat.
Just as he turned to leave, the young man suddenly called out to him in French with a French accent.
“Sir, please wait a moment.”
Lin Xiaoyang froze for a moment and instinctively turned around, pointing at himself.
“Are you talking to me? Is there something I can help you with?”
The young man put away his violin. A mysterious smile curved across his lips, and there was a deliberate hint of probing in his eyes.
“Yes. Someone asked me to wait for you here.”
Lin Xiaoyang frowned, becoming alert.
“Who asked you to wait for me?”
The young man shrugged and gave a deliberately mysterious smile.
“I don’t know him, but he said, ‘This man will become your boss someday.’”
Lin Xiaoyang was slightly startled, and the alarm bells immediately went off in his mind.
“Can you tell me your name?”
The blond young man held out his hand, a playful glint flashing in his eyes.
“My name is Wilson, sir. I’m from the French Riviera in southern France. Have you ever been there?”
Lin Xiaoyang shook his hand and gave him a polite smile.
“Yes, I have. It’s a beautiful place.”
Wilson raised an eyebrow.
“You’re staying at the Paradise Inn right now, aren’t you?”
Lin Xiaoyang was slightly startled, surprise flashing across his face.
“Yes, but how did you know?”
Wilson gave a light laugh and lowered his head to adjust his bow, as if he had already anticipated Lin Xiaoyang’s reaction.
“Huang Lihua told me.”
“Huang Lihua? That artist? Are you sure?”
At the mention of this name, Lin Xiaoyang’s brows drew together even more tightly. He immediately remembered the painting in his room. The artist was Huang Lihua.
Wilson nodded, his tone firm.
“Yes. He said you would come here this weekend.”
Lin Xiaoyang’s confusion deepened, and the question almost escaped his lips.
“But I’ve never met him.”
Wilson looked at him meaningfully, a thought-provoking smile appearing at the corners of his mouth.
“You’ll meet him very soon.”
Lin Xiaoyang stared at him with half-belief and half-doubt, a strange uneasiness rising in his heart.
“This is really strange.”
Wilson patted his violin case and smiled casually.
“Anyway, it was nice meeting you. I’ll come find you again. Take care.”
After saying this, he lowered his head and began packing up his instrument and music stand, seemingly no longer intending to say anything more. Lin Xiaoyang stood where he was, watching Wilson walk away, his mind filled with doubts.
Xiaoyang lowered his head and looked at the lake. The glow of the setting sun dyed the rippling water red and was reflected on his face as well. Deep down, he had a vague feeling—
Someone seemed to have their eyes on him.
But who were they?
And why were they doing this?
