[3] Princess Maria
### 7
Night had fallen heavily. The Sky Castle of the Dark World stood above the endless black mist, solitary and mysterious. Inside the palace's grand hall, ever-burning candles flickered between enormous stone pillars, illuminating the intricate reliefs carved into the walls. Princess Maria sat upright on a sandalwood throne, her long gown trailing onto the floor. Her jet-black hair flowed smoothly over her shoulders like silk. Her features were so exquisite that she looked like a work of art carved by a master sculptor, yet there was an alluring coldness about her that was difficult to read.
Before her, the Dragon Knight stood straight, his arms crossed over his chest, his steady gaze sweeping over the two men who had just entered the grand hall.
“Your Highness, Princess.”
Huang Lihua straightened and said in a deep voice, “Princess, Lin Xiaoyang has arrived at the hotel.”
Upon hearing this, the corners of Maria's lips lifted slightly. With a faint, inscrutable smile, she said, “Good. We will proceed according to the original plan. First, we will bring Anderson's men who are occupying Paradise Inn under our control and use the hotel as a forward command post. Above all, we must not arouse Anderson's suspicions.”
Wilson frowned slightly and asked firmly, “Princess, why don't we simply eliminate Robert and his men? We will have to confront the Anderson Group sooner or later. Wouldn't this just be unnecessary?”
The Dragon Knight, who had remained silent until then, spoke at last. His voice was calm, unhurried, deep, and powerful.
“Eliminating Robert would be easy, but that might cause word to get out and reach Anderson's ears. The Princess intends to win Robert over through benevolence, so that he will willingly pledge his loyalty and serve her.”
Wilson pondered for a moment, then nodded slightly and said respectfully, “I see. Your Highness has thought of everything.”
Maria's gaze slowly swept across the others before she spoke in a quiet voice.
“The dead drop agent I sent infiltrated Anderson's base, Bat Castle, and has sent word that they have found the girl named Xie Hui-jun. She is now being kept at Anderson's side.”
Hearing this, Huang Lihua's pupils contracted slightly, and he blurted out in surprise, “Then, hasn't that girl also suffered...?”
Maria's gaze grew deep, as though she could see through the tangled threads of fate. Her tone was calm, yet carried a certain firmness.
“This is all the arrangement of the God of Fate. Otherwise, Lin Xiaoyang and your granddaughter, Huang Minhua, would never be able to meet in the future. Just proceed according to plan.”
A look of sudden understanding flashed through Huang Lihua's eyes. He drew a deep breath and said solemnly, “I understand, Princess. Then we will take our leave for now.”
He and Wilson bowed with their hands clasped once more, then turned and left. As their footsteps gradually faded away, the grand hall once again fell into an oppressive silence. Maria remained seated on her throne, lightly tapping her fingertips against the armrest, a meaningful smile slowly appearing at the corners of her lips.
### 8
Toward evening, the sky was as still as the surface of a lake, and twilight gradually spread across the glass windows. Lin Xiaoyang stepped into the lake-facing lobby on the first floor of the hotel. The air carried a faint aroma of coffee and the atmosphere of years gone by. Warm yellow light from the wall lamps fell across the polished redwood furniture, while in one corner of the lobby it outlined a figure—Huang Lihua, who was sitting with his head lowered in thought, lightly tapping his fingers on the table as though waiting for something.
Xiaoyang passed by the vending machine, casually took two cups of hot coffee, and walked toward him. The lids trembled slightly, releasing wisps of steam.
“Huang Lihua, I'm glad to see you again.” Xiaoyang smiled as he placed one of the cups of coffee in front of him.
Huang Lihua looked up. There was a complicated expression in his eyes. He took the coffee and said quietly, “Thanks.”
Xiaoyang pulled out a chair and sat down. He rubbed his finger along the rim of the cup for a moment before saying, “Last night... I felt as though I had a strange dream.”
Before he could finish speaking, a whisper came from the front desk. One of the attendants glanced in their direction, then immediately leaned over and whispered into the ear of Robert, the innkeeper. Robert's expression changed slightly as he lowered his head and dialed an internal phone line.
Huang Lihua took a small sip of coffee and said calmly, yet with an unmistakable warning in his voice, “Young man, I came here specifically to warn you.”
Xiaoyang frowned slightly, a strange premonition rising in his heart. “Warn me about what?”
Huang Lihua did not answer immediately. Instead, he set down his coffee cup and slowly asked, “What is today's date?”
Xiaoyang looked down at his watch. “April 13. Friday.”
Huang Lihua's fingers trembled slightly. His eyes seemed to sink into the depths of some distant memory. He said quietly, “You can't stay here overnight tonight.”
Xiaoyang froze for a moment, the hand holding his coffee coming to a halt. “Why?”
“Because...” Huang Lihua's expression suddenly darkened. He abruptly lowered his head, pressed close to the table, and pointed behind Xiaoyang with a trembling finger.
Xiaoyang's heart suddenly began to race. Following his gesture, he turned around—only to see four tall, heavily built white men entering the lobby. They were dressed in spotless medical uniforms, and one of them was carrying a heavy, long-sleeved white restraint garment—a protective garment used in psychiatric hospitals.
The air instantly seemed to solidify. Xiaoyang's throat went dry, and he unconsciously tightened his grip on the coffee cup.
Huang Lihua lowered his voice and spoke rapidly. “Do you still remember the date inscribed on that mural?”
“I remember... April 13, 1925.” Xiaoyang answered without hesitation.
A shadow appeared in Huang Lihua's eyes. “That was the night I was killed.”
Xiaoyang's pupils contracted slightly. “What? You said you were killed? But you're obviously still alive...”
“There's no time to explain!” Huang Lihua quickly reached out his hand. “Hurry. Write your name and today's date in the palm of my hand!”
Xiaoyang's heartbeat nearly drowned out all the sounds around him, but his instincts told him that this was far stranger than he could have imagined. He gritted his teeth, quickly took the fountain pen from his pocket, and wrote a line of words in Huang Lihua's palm.
Huang Lihua drew a deep breath and quickly instructed him, “Now, go to the front desk and check out immediately. Leave before sunset! Whatever you do, don't stay overnight! If you want to see me again, come back tomorrow and find me in the sculpture garden outside the lobby. When you see the words written in the palm of my hand, you'll understand everything.”
“But—”
“Remember! In a moment, pretend you don't know me. No matter what happens, don't show any unusual expression. I won't hurt you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the four white men had already closed in. Three of them swiftly grabbed Huang Lihua and pinned him firmly against the table. A chair toppled to the floor with a piercing crash.
“Let me go!” Huang Lihua struggled furiously, but his hands were soon forced behind his back, and the protective garment was quickly put on him.
One of the white men turned toward Xiaoyang and gave him a professional smile. In German, he said, “I'm sorry, sir. This Chinese man is mentally unstable. We need to take him back to the sanatorium. We hope we haven't disturbed you.”
Xiaoyang's heart pounded violently. Forcing himself to remain calm, he managed a strained smile. “It's all right. Go ahead.”
His eyes followed the four burly men as they pushed and dragged Huang Lihua away from the lobby. Huang Lihua looked back. His gaze was deep, and his lips parted slightly, as though he still wanted to say something... but he was already being held down and disappeared at the end of the corridor.
Xiaoyang felt cold all over, as though an invisible hand were crawling up from the back of his neck toward his scalp.
He turned and ran back to his room. Trembling, he approached the mural and quickly searched it with his eyes. When his gaze fell on the lower left corner, among the group of gentlemen, he saw Huang Lihua!
And Huang Lihua's eyes... were actually moving slowly!
Fear instantly surged like a tidal wave, sweeping away Xiaoyang's reason. Trembling, he hurriedly packed his luggage and practically crashed through the door.
In the lobby, Robert watched him walk toward the front desk, the corners of his mouth curling slightly upward.
Xiaoyang paid his bill, checked out, and hysterically rushed out of the hotel, heading straight for the parking lot. He threw his luggage onto the passenger seat, trembling as he started the engine, stepped on the accelerator, and sped away from the strange “Paradise Inn” and the forbidden territory known as the “Forgotten Forest.”
When the car emerged from the mahogany forest, he looked back—
The entire forest had already been swallowed by the dense mountain mist, transformed into a realm of the underworld.
### 9
The motorhome slowly pulled into the parking lot of a small restaurant beside the road that circled the lake. Green trees shaded the surrounding area, and the lake was as smooth as a mirror. Occasionally, a few waterbirds skimmed across its surface. Lin Xiaoyang opened the car door and walked toward the restaurant. His steps were somewhat heavy, as though his thoughts were still trapped in a moment from dusk.
Inside the restaurant, the air was filled with the aroma of toasted bread and coffee. Warm light reflected off the wooden tables and chairs, creating a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere. Lin Xiaoyang walked to the counter, ordered a set meal, and then casually found a seat in a corner.
Just as he took his phone out of his bag to check his email, a light sound of footsteps broke the silence. Wilson appeared at the restaurant entrance, holding a steaming cup of coffee and walking casually toward Lin Xiaoyang.
Wilson was dressed in a dark suit, with his tie loosened slightly, giving him a relaxed, unconstrained appearance. He smiled faintly, with a hint of amusement and anticipation in his eyes.
“It's good to see you again.”
Without ceremony, Wilson sat down and placed his coffee on the table, his movements smooth and natural.
Lin Xiaoyang looked up and smiled slightly. He put down his phone. “What brings you here?” His deep voice carried a hint of uncertainty. At the same time, he instinctively leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest as though somewhat guarded.
Wilson looked at him and paid no attention to Xiaoyang's wariness. “Why did you leave the hotel?” His expression became more serious, and his tone carried obvious concern.
Instead of answering, Lin Xiaoyang asked in return. After a moment of thought, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly. “I met Huang Lihua yesterday. Some things happened while we were there.”
His voice was somewhat low, and the images in his mind instantly returned to the unpleasant events that had just occurred.
Wilson frowned, paused for a moment, then slowly set down his coffee cup and leaned forward slightly. His gaze grew sharper. “What happened? Tell me.”
He leaned forward slightly, his body language showing how intensely interested he was in what had happened to Lin Xiaoyang.
Lin Xiaoyang sighed, his gaze becoming somewhat unfocused for a moment. He unconsciously stroked the rim of his cup, as though considering whether he should continue.
“So you speak Chinese.” He gave a bitter smile, and a trace of helplessness flashed in his eyes. “Huang Lihua told me I had to leave that place tonight, because if I didn't, I might be in danger. He specifically came to warn me to leave, but then the hotel security guards took him away.”
He paused, sighed, and frowned deeply, as though thinking about what he should say next.
After hearing this, Wilson's expression changed slightly. His brows drew tightly together, and surprise and vigilance appeared in his eyes.
“Wow! I understand. That hotel is no good. The people inside...” he said in a low voice, his gaze unconsciously shifting toward the window.
Xiaoyang lowered his head, visibly tense, his hands lightly clasped together on the tabletop. “Do you know something about that hotel?” His voice was somewhat urgent, and his wary eyes fixed on Wilson.
Wilson took a deep breath and looked up at Lin Xiaoyang. His gaze became complicated.
“I know something about that hotel. He may be in danger now.” He looked directly at Lin Xiaoyang, a kind of indescribable concern in his eyes.
Lin Xiaoyang's expression suddenly became tense. His hands tightened slightly into fists as he said in a low voice, “We have to get him out of danger. I feel like something is very wrong with that hotel.” His tone was firm, and determination showed in his eyes, as though he had already made up his mind.
Wilson gently patted Lin Xiaoyang on the shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile. “Don't worry. I'll take care of this.” His voice was calm, yet carried a strength that inspired confidence.
Lin Xiaoyang nodded. Although there was still some anxiety on his face, a trace of trust flickered in his eyes. They silently looked at each other, and the atmosphere became even quieter and more resolute.
