In early summer, Lake Lucerne looked like a colorful painting. Gentle ripples shimmered across the surface, reflecting the green mountains on both shores. As a breeze passed by, the air was filled with the fragrance of flowers and grass. Fallen petals drifted down and scattered across the grass, adding a touch of dreamlike beauty to this earthly paradise. Lin Xiaoyang and Huang Minhua leisurely rode a tandem bicycle through this picturesque scenery. The surrounding landscape was like a beautiful scene inside a picture frame. They slowed down, admiring every splash of color and every play of light and shadow along the lakeside.

Huang Minhua leaned slightly toward Lin Xiaoyang, her eyes showing a look of enchantment. She said softly, “The pace of life here is really relaxed. It feels like people here spend every day on vacation.”

Lin Xiaoyang smiled and nodded, adjusting the bicycle’s speed so that it moved more steadily. He glanced at Minhua, a hint of emotion in his eyes, and said gently, “Yes, Minhua. Maybe we’re used to the crowded urban life in Taiwan, always so busy that we’re like headless flies. But here, the Swiss seem to understand better how to enjoy every moment. Life is supposed to be like this.”

Huang Minhua looked down at the road beneath her feet, an involuntary smile appearing at the corners of her mouth. “You’re right. I’m still slowly getting used to the pace of life here.” She paused, then a thoughtful look flashed across her eyes. Her gaze returned to Lin Xiaoyang. “But actually, I really like this kind of life, too. The atmosphere here makes people feel especially relaxed.”

Lin Xiaoyang chuckled. “I used to travel to Hualien and Taitung quite often. The pace there is somewhat similar to here. People aren’t in a hurry or anxious. They live as they please. This kind of lifestyle is actually quite charming.”

Huang Minhua’s eyes lit up. She turned toward Lin Xiaoyang and said excitedly, “Hualien and Taitung? I go there often! The scenery is wonderful, especially the places that are great for sketching from life. They’re definitely among my favorite travel destinations.”

Lin Xiaoyang nodded slightly, a hint of appreciation in his eyes. “I know you like to travel. Coming all the way here from Paris by yourself shows how much you love exploring the world.”

Huang Minhua smiled softly, a faint blush of shyness appearing on her face. “Yes. I also like adventure, and learning. Speaking of which, did you know there are still many places worth visiting around here? They’re absolutely beautiful.”

Lin Xiaoyang sighed softly, a hint of regret in his eyes. “Indeed, there are many beautiful attractions here. But there are some things going on at the hotel recently, so I can’t leave.”

Huang Minhua frowned thoughtfully. “It sounds like you’re pretty busy. After all, you’re the boss. You can’t just put your work aside to keep me company.”

Lin Xiaoyang smiled slightly and pursed his lips. “Yes. These things can only be handled by me personally.”

Huang Minhua’s expression became slightly more serious. “Actually, sometimes I feel that the atmosphere here is a little strange, too. That mural, and unexpectedly meeting Grandpa... These experiences and coincidences are just like something out of a fantasy novel. And you seem to have a lot on your mind. You always seem a little uneasy.”

Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath and looked toward the mountains and waters in the distance. His voice was low. “Minhua, I don’t want you to get caught up in this. Nothing here is as simple as it appears on the surface. I hope you can stay away from those unnecessary troubles.”

Huang Minhua looked at him quietly. A trace of understanding and concern flashed in her eyes. She gently reached out and held Lin Xiaoyang’s hand, gazing at him tenderly. “Big Brother, although I can’t completely understand, I hope you’ll rely on me more. If you’re willing to tell me, maybe I can help you share some of the burden.”

Lin Xiaoyang was slightly stunned. Then he gave a faint smile and looked down into Huang Minhua’s sincere eyes. “Thank you, Minhua. Just knowing that you care this much is enough.”

He gently lowered his head and softly kissed Huang Minhua on the forehead. A warm smile appeared on her face. The two of them quietly walked along the lakeside, listening to the wind and the sound of the lake water lapping against the shore, as if the world around them had fallen silent at that moment.

30

One morning in early May, gentle sunlight streamed through the window of Room 505, illuminating the quiet space around them. Huang Minhua packed her belongings into her suitcase one item at a time, a slight reluctance showing on her face. Lin Xiaoyang and Huang Lihua stood beside her, the emotions between them quietly flowing through this brief farewell.

Huang Lihua patted Minhua on the shoulder, his voice carrying a trace of reluctance and concern. “When you get back to Paris, take good care of yourself, okay? I’ve put some money into your account for you. You can withdraw it whenever you need it for your living expenses.” His voice was gentle, and the thoughtful care in his words was heartwarming.

Huang Minhua smiled softly and turned her gaze toward him, her eyes filled with gratitude. “Grandpa, I’m already a grown woman. You don’t need to worry about me anymore.” She shook her head slightly, as if trying to sweep away all of her grandfather’s worries.

Huang Lihua’s expression softened. He reached over to the table and picked up an exquisite sandalwood box. The lid gleamed faintly, as if concealing some mysterious power. “This is for you.” He opened the lid, revealing a delicate cross inside. “Princess Maria asked me to give you this cross. Its magical power can protect you from evil.”

Huang Minhua took the cross, her fingers lightly touching the cold metal. Just as she was about to examine its details, Lin Xiaoyang gently placed a hand on her wrist, a trace of determination in his eyes. “Put it on after your grandfather leaves. The magical power of this cross might harm your grandfather.” His tone was calm, but the deeper meaning in his eyes could not be concealed.

Huang Minhua was stunned for a moment. She looked at Xiaoyang with a hint of confusion. “By saying that, are you hinting to me that Grandpa...?”

Huang Lihua smiled, breaking the silence. His voice was calm yet filled with a quiet strength. “Minhua, I really am different from you and the others.” As he said this, his eyes carried the wisdom of someone who had seen through everything.

Huang Minhua finally felt relieved and nodded with a smile. “I see. Next spring, when school is on break, can I come back here for vacation?”

Huang Lihua nodded, his face showing a kindly smile. “Of course. By then, things here should have returned to normal.”

A trace of worry appeared in Huang Minhua’s eyes. She lowered her head slightly, tightly gripping the cross in her hand, and said softly, “I already sent an email to my parents telling them that I reunited with Grandpa. They were very surprised and said they really wanted to come here immediately to meet Grandpa. But I know things may not be peaceful here, so I haven’t let them come for the time being.”

Huang Lihua’s gaze softened, and he nodded slightly. “Yes, you’ll meet each other sooner or later. There’s no need to rush. You two probably have some heartfelt things to say to each other, so I’ll go back and get some rest.”

He stood up and walked toward the door. Turning back to look at the two of them, he smiled and said, “Good night.” Then he left the room, leaving the two of them standing quietly where they were.

The air in the room seemed somewhat heavy. Lin Xiaoyang looked at Minhua, wanting to speak but stopping himself. The emotions he could not conceal surged in his eyes like waves. Huang Minhua noticed his uneasiness and looked at Xiaoyang with a bright smile. She asked softly, “Big Brother, what do you want to tell me?”

Xiaoyang’s cheeks flushed slightly, and his heartbeat involuntarily quickened. He opened his mouth, but could not manage to say a complete sentence. A spark of insight flashed in Minhua’s eyes. She smiled softly, her tone playful yet carrying a hint of testing. “I’m guessing you want to say, ‘I like you, Minhua,’ right? Am I wrong?”

Xiaoyang was startled. Then he gave a wry smile and nodded, his eyes filled with emotions mingling helplessness and joy. He lowered his head and said softly, “I... I really was thinking that.”

Minhua’s smile became even brighter. Without hesitation, she reached out and gently took Xiaoyang’s hand. The warmth of their fingertips instantly shortened the distance between them. “During the time we’ve spent together, Big Brother, I could feel how you feel about me.” Her voice was low and gentle, filled with a hint of deep affection.

Xiaoyang’s heartbeat quickened. His gaze unconsciously settled on Minhua’s eyes, as if at that moment, only the two of them existed. His voice was gentle yet firm. “I’ll wait for you to come back here, Minhua.”

Huang Minhua’s eyes grew slightly moist. She nodded, then took the initiative to open her arms and pull Xiaoyang tightly into her embrace. The two kissed deeply, and time seemed to stand still. Xiaoyang’s mind went blank, as if a beam of light had pierced through his soul. One image after another rapidly flashed through his mind—these seemed to be memories from his previous life.

Minhua noticed something unusual about Xiaoyang. She released him, gently took his hand, and asked in a low voice, “Big Brother, what’s wrong with you? Your expression suddenly looks so strange!”

Xiaoyang smiled somewhat sheepishly, a trace of bitterness on his face. “It’s nothing. Just now, you kind of... shocked me.” His tone was slightly playful, yet carried a hint of helplessness.

Huang Minhua smiled shyly and said softly, “That was my first kiss! Big Brother.” Her cheeks were slightly flushed, and her voice was filled with sweetness.

Xiaoyang playfully raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Mine too.” His eyes were relaxed, but his heart was filled with this emotion.

Huang Minhua stared at Xiaoyang in disbelief. “I don’t believe you! Big Brother, you’re lying! With your looks and everything you have going for you, you must be the Prince Charming of many girls’ dreams.”

Xiaoyang smiled, his tone relaxed. “All right! I confess. This was my one-thousand-and-first first kiss.” His tone was playful, as if lightly revealing a little of the truth beneath the joke.

Huang Minhua widened her eyes and pretended to be angry. “Oh, come on! Your one-thousand-and-first? You’re lying!” Her face was full of laughter.

Xiaoyang was not about to back down. He smiled and said, “You’re the second girl I’ve ever kissed. That’s really the truth.”

Huang Minhua’s eyes widened with curiosity. “Then what about the girl you first fell in love with?”

Xiaoyang’s expression grew somewhat dim. He lowered his head, his voice low. “The year before last, after she had an argument with me, she came to Europe alone to travel independently. Not long afterward, we lost contact with her, and even her family is still looking for her to this day. I came to Europe to travel because I originally wanted to find her, but...”

Huang Minhua was silent for a moment, then asked, “But she never showed up?”

Xiaoyang nodded heavily, his face filled with pain he had never been able to let go of. “Yes.”

Seeing Xiaoyang in such pain, Huang Minhua gently lowered her hand, her eyes filled with extraordinarily tender understanding. “Do you... still love her very much?”

A trace of helpless sorrow appeared in Xiaoyang’s eyes. He nodded gently. “Yes.”

Huang Minhua smiled calmly, a mature serenity in her eyes. “Okay. If she really does come back, I’ll wish you and her well. That’s the promise between you and me, Big Brother.”

31

That night, darkness quietly covered the entire cottage. Pale moonlight filtered through the gap in the curtains, falling across Huang Minhua as she tossed and turned in bed. Her eyes were wide open, staring at nothing, yet she could not calm herself down. Her heart seemed to be pulled by some invisible force as she recalled her conversation with Lin Xiaoyang.

She gently pulled the blanket tighter, clasping her hands over her chest as her thoughts surged like a tide. Lin Xiaoyang had once said those words, and they were like a key that had unconsciously unlocked some corner of her heart. She whispered to herself, “The year before last, after she had an argument with me, she came to Europe alone to travel independently, and not long afterward, we lost contact with her. Even her family is still looking for her. I came to Europe to travel and write, originally because I wanted to find her, but...”

She turned onto her side and gazed at the moonlight slowly moving beyond the window. A warm current seemed to rise in her heart. “Is Big Brother really a devoted man, just as he said?” She frowned slightly, lightly touching her lips with her fingers, deep in thought. “But then why would he make up a lie to comfort me? If that missing girl really comes back, should I leave without hesitation?” Her brow furrowed tightly, and then she sighed softly. “But why should I be the one to step aside?”

Powerlessly, she buried her head in the pillow and closed her eyes, trying to calm herself. But the questions and struggles in her mind followed her like a shadow, impossible to put aside.

At that moment, Lin Xiaoyang was no better off. The scattered papers and notebooks on the desk seemed to symbolize his thoughts. He sat in the chair with his back against the desk, his elbow supporting his head, his eyes vacant, as if trapped in a silent storm. He recalled his conversation with Huang Minhua. Those words were like nails, leaving deep marks in his heart.

He murmured softly to himself, “I came to Europe to travel and write, originally because I wanted to find her, but...” He raised his head and looked at a landscape painting on the wall. The distant mountains and lake in the painting were tranquil and expansive, completely different from the state of his heart at that moment. At that instant, he seemed to see the struggle within himself—a love from the past that he could not let go of, and Huang Minhua, who had made his heart beat again.

He helplessly brushed his fingers lightly across the surface of the desk. Memories of the past surged like a tide, difficult to escape. The pain and guilt in his heart kept intertwining, leaving him unable to think clearly. Finally, he let his hand fall and released a long sigh.

“What am I supposed to do?” he murmured to himself.

That deep contradiction and confusion felt like an impassable chasm, weighing heavily on his heart.
