[Eight] The Shocking Inside Story
### 27
Night fell, and an air of mystery lingered inside the quiet hotel. Following their agreement, Minhua gently pushed open the door to Room 504. The dim yellow light inside the room looked soft and hazy behind the curtains. She stepped inside and quietly asked from the doorway, “Teacher Lin, who are you taking me to meet?”
Lin Xiaoyang stood up from beside a table and tilted his head slightly, a mysterious smile appearing at the corners of his mouth. “Minhua, I told you that you were going to be surprised. I’m taking you to meet your grandfather, Huang Lihua, whom you have never met.”
Minhua froze, her brows slightly furrowed as she stared at Lin Xiaoyang in confusion. “Huang Lihua? Are you sure he claims to be Huang Lihua?” A trace of disbelief could be heard in her voice.
Lin Xiaoyang remained calm, the corners of his lips lifting slightly, as though he was not surprised at all by Minhua’s question. “Yes, I’m sure.”
Minhua suddenly took a step backward, her eyes widening as confusion filled her mind. “Huang Lihua really is my grandfather. I’ve only seen photographs of him when he was young in my father’s photo album. My father told me that he went to France to study, and a few years later, he lost contact with his family.”
Lin Xiaoyang sighed softly, a trace of memory showing in his eyes. “Your grandfather has been living in this hotel all along. When I came here traveling, if he hadn’t stepped in and saved me in time, I might have already become a vampire.” His voice was calm, but every word seemed to reveal a danger that had never been fully spoken of.
A look of shock flashed through Minhua’s eyes. A chill ran through her instinctively, and uneasiness filled her voice. “A vampire? Don’t scare me with jokes like that.”
Lin Xiaoyang’s expression darkened, becoming serious. “I’m not joking with you, Minhua. Everything I’m telling you is true. When I stayed at this hotel last year, the innkeeper and the servers here were all vampires. At first, I didn’t realize it. But your grandfather couldn’t bear to watch me become like them, so at the critical moment, he warned me to leave immediately.”
Minhua froze for a moment, completely bewildered. “After hearing you say all this, I have to go meet my grandfather. You’ve really awakened my curiosity.”
Lin Xiaoyang gave a soft laugh, his gaze firm. “All right. I’ll take you to meet him right now. Follow me.”
He turned and led Minhua out of the room. They passed through the dim hallway and finally arrived in front of a huge mural. Several musicians were performing outdoors in the scene, and a melodious tune seemed to flow out from the painting.
“This painting.” Lin Xiaoyang pointed at the mural, his voice becoming low. “Huang Lihua lives inside this mural.”
Minhua froze and gave a quiet laugh. “Lives inside this mural? Come on. How could that be possible?”
Lin Xiaoyang’s expression did not change, and his voice carried a hint of mystery. “This mural can lead to another world, and its artist is none other than your grandfather, Huang Lihua. Don’t ask so many questions yet. I’ll take you inside.”
Minhua froze, still unable to completely believe what she had heard, but Lin Xiaoyang had already raised his hand and gently tapped his fingertips against the mural.
“Tap, tap, tap.”
Following the three crisp knocks, a faint echo came from inside the mural. “Come in! I’ve been waiting for you.”
Minhua’s heart began to race. Her eyes widened even further, shock and curiosity mingling across her face. Lin Xiaoyang turned around with a reassuring smile and gently took her hand. “Don’t be afraid. Come with me.”
The texture of the painting gradually twisted, revealing the outline of a door. The door slowly opened, and a faint light shone through the opening, carrying a strange attraction. Holding Minhua’s hand, Lin Xiaoyang led her step by step through the door and into an entirely new world.
Minhua’s heart was filled with conflicting emotions, yet her steps became steadier under Lin Xiaoyang’s guidance. She did not know what she would face next, but at that moment, she could only follow Lin Xiaoyang’s steps into the unknown realm.
### 28
Inside, the garden courtyard was filled with cheerful music and relaxed laughter. The air seemed to be filled with a certain kind of magic, making everyone present unable to resist being swept up in it. In the courtyard, a band was playing a rhythmic dance tune. The music flowed as smoothly as running water, while the trees on both sides swayed gently. Sunlight streamed through the branches and leaves onto the ground, and dappled patches of light moved with the dancers’ steps. Men and women danced in pairs, the silhouettes of skirts and suits intertwining beneath the sunlight. Their footsteps were light, like spirits being guided by the music.
At a nearby café area, several elderly people and children sat together, chatting and laughing. Delicate desserts and steaming drinks were spread across the tables. The aroma of caramel and coffee filled the air, naturally putting people at ease.
After Huang Minhua entered this strange scene under Lin Xiaoyang’s guidance, she hesitated for a moment before finally speaking softly, her face filled with amazement. “Wow! This place is just like the legendary Peach Blossom Spring!” She took a deep breath, the shock still not completely gone from her eyes. Her voice carried a trace of disbelief. “At first, I thought this place would be terrifying. Instead, it turned out to be such a dreamlike place.”
Her gaze wandered over the surroundings, and she seemed to be completely immersed, body and soul, in this unreal world. Looking at her expression, Lin Xiaoyang could not help smiling slightly. “I knew this would be hard for you to understand. Everything here is strange, but you’ll gradually get used to it.”
Suddenly, Huang Lihua walked over from the crowd. He smiled as he approached with steady steps, a deep light in his eyes. He extended his hand and warmly shook Lin Xiaoyang’s hand, his voice carrying a long-missed sense of familiarity. “Come with me.” His voice was low, yet it carried a reassuring strength.
Huang Minhua looked at him, a trace of confusion flashing in her eyes. She unconsciously tilted her head and carefully studied the man who looked remarkably like the grandfather in the photographs she remembered. She thought to herself, **Is this man really my grandfather? Why does he look so much younger than he does in the photographs?** Her lips pressed together slightly as an inexplicable emotion welled up inside her.
Huang Lihua seemed to notice her gaze. He turned around and smiled gently. His voice was soft. “You want to ask why I’m so young, don’t you? You’ll understand everything later.” He led them through narrow streets and alleys, every step seeming to lead into an unknown world. Huang Minhua unconsciously quickened her pace to follow him.
Soon, they arrived in front of a three-story garden villa. The villa was surrounded by dense shrubs, their branches and leaves lush and thick, while the fragrance of flowers filled the air. The surrounding plants and flowers grew in a natural, graceful arrangement, and birdsong could occasionally be heard from the courtyard, giving the entire place an atmosphere of quiet elegance. Sunlight streamed down through gaps in the leaves, and dappled shadows danced along the pathway, as though every stone slab had been given life.
Looking at the beautiful scene before him, Lin Xiaoyang suddenly became puzzled. He stopped and could not help asking, “Elder, why is this place reversed from our world, with day and night switched? Why does everything here seem so unreal?” There was a trace of confusion in his voice.
Huang Lihua narrowed his eyes slightly, a faint smile appearing at the corners of his mouth. “Haven’t you heard the saying, ‘Humans and ghosts belong to different worlds’? This way, we won’t interfere with each other.” He waved his hand lightly, as though that single sentence explained everything.
Lin Xiaoyang nodded slightly, a knowing smile on his face. “Yes. I almost forgot that you are...” Before finishing the sentence, he deliberately stopped, avoiding touching upon those matters from the past that neither of them wanted to discuss.
Huang Lihua glanced at him and said casually, “Don’t scare my granddaughter.” He gave Lin Xiaoyang a meaningful look, and Xiaoyang immediately understood. He changed the subject. “Minhua, let me introduce you. This is Huang Lihua. He says you’re his granddaughter.” There was a hint of playfulness in his voice.
Huang Minhua was still somewhat timid. She lowered her head, wanting to speak but swallowing the words back. Her hands were gently clasped in front of her chest, and an unmistakable shyness appeared on her face. Her eyes remained fixed on Huang Lihua’s face, and her heartbeat suddenly quickened. Her lips trembled slightly. “Are you really my grandfather?” she asked, almost to herself.
Huang Lihua smiled gently at her, his voice warm and reassuring. “It’s only natural that you’re not used to this, since this is our first meeting.” His smile helped Huang Minhua relax somewhat.
However, Lin Xiaoyang’s attention was drawn to a painting on the wall. He walked over to it and pointed to the signature in the lower-right corner. “I’ve seen this person before.” A trace of doubt colored his voice.
Huang Lihua’s gaze suddenly sharpened. He seemed somewhat uneasy about the painting as well and asked curiously, “You’ve seen Qiu? Where?”
Lin Xiaoyang lowered his head in thought, then answered, “By the Seine in Paris, in a riverside park.” As he recalled that incident, a trace of uneasiness rose in his heart.
A bitter smile flashed across Huang Lihua’s face. His eyes became deep, as though he had fallen into a certain memory. “Trouble is coming! Qiu will definitely come back here. This August, before Friday the 13th, we’re probably going to have no peace from then on!” he said solemnly, his tone carrying a faint warning.
After hearing this, Lin Xiaoyang could not help frowning. “How could that be? That Mr. Qiu said that you used to be his teacher and taught him how to paint.” He felt that the matter was far more complicated than he had imagined.
At that moment, Huang Lihua suddenly reached out and gently brushed his hand across Minhua’s face. The movement was gentle yet carried a certain irresistible power. Seeing this, Lin Xiaoyang was startled and could not help shouting, “My God! What did you do to Minhua?” His voice was filled with shock and confusion.
Huang Lihua smiled slightly, his expression calm. “Don’t worry. I just used a spell to immobilize her, so she temporarily cannot hear our conversation from this point on. There are some things she shouldn’t know, and there’s no need for her to become involved.”
Lin Xiaoyang was still puzzled, confusion written all over his face. “Why not let Minhua know? She’s your own family!”
A trace of concern flashed through Huang Lihua’s eyes. He replied in a low voice, “If Minhua knows nothing about it, she won’t get caught up in this. I’m doing this to protect her.” His tone was steady, but the deeper meaning behind his words was difficult to discern.
