[Fifteen] Father John Chen Defeats the Two Chief Enforcers

54

Friday the 13th. A gloomy atmosphere hung over the land, and a chill seemed to seep into people’s hearts.

Even at noon, the sky remained dark and gray, while the thick sinister energy made the sunlight look pale and powerless. Outside Paradise Inn, the streetlights cast a dim yellow glow through the mist, and few pedestrians could be seen. This was a place where vampires held their nightly feasts, and tonight, it was a gathering where all kinds of supernatural creatures would run wild.

Wilson stood at the entrance. Behind him, two servers dressed in black suits stood straight, their vigilant eyes scanning every guest who arrived. A gold-lettered plaque hung above the hotel entrance. Directly beneath it, a notice was written in English, French, German, Latin, and Chinese: “Private party tonight. Closed to the public.”

Two travelers slowly approached, their shadows stretched long by the lights at the hotel entrance.

“Hmm?” Guest A frowned. “You’re closed tonight?”

Wilson elegantly removed his top hat, bowed slightly, and gave them a standard professional smile. “Yes. We’re very sorry.”

Guest B looked around in confusion. “What about accommodations? Can we still book a room?”

Wilson gently shook his head. “All of our rooms are fully booked tonight. You may wish to choose another hotel nearby.”

Guest A sighed, looking rather disappointed. “What a shame. Our friends strongly recommended this place. That’s why we came all this way.”

They turned and walked away. After taking only a few steps, another pair of guests had already stepped onto the stairs. Wilson’s gaze sharpened. These newcomers... were regular guests.

Ghost Soldier C narrowed his eyes as he examined the entrance. “Hey, did this place change owners? I’ve never seen the person working the front desk before.”

Human-Ghost D lightly tapped the edge of the door, feeling the wood grain with his fingers. “It’s only been a few months since I was last here, and even the entrance has been renovated.”

Wilson smiled and gestured invitingly. “The hotel has been renovated and now offers more complete, high-quality services. Please come in, my fellow supernatural friends.”

The two human-ghosts exchanged a glance, chuckled softly, and pushed open the door.

Inside the hotel lobby, candlelight flickered. Red velvet sofas were arranged throughout the room, accompanied by oak tables decorated with vintage carvings. A faint scent of musk filled the air. The seats were already sixty to seventy percent occupied, and all the guests were elegantly dressed, yet they subtly gave off an unusual aura.

Among these “guests,” only two were not vampires.

Father John Chen was dressed like a gentleman, his leather shoes polished until they gleamed. He elegantly raised a glass of red wine, pretending to savor it carefully while remaining constantly alert to every movement around him. The scent of his cologne concealed his true smell, making him appear to be an ordinary art dealer.

Lin Xiaoyang, meanwhile, wore a neat server’s uniform and carried a tray as he moved through the crowd. His movements were swift and efficient, and his expression remained calm as he steadily served tea and refreshments to each guest. To conceal his own scent, he had rubbed a special lotion over his skin, making himself undetectable to the vampires’ keen sense of smell.

At that moment, the entrance opened again. Wilson recognized the newcomer—it was George, the Phantom Hand. His cloak trembled slightly, while Attis beside him said nothing, his eyes as sharp as a hawk’s.

Wilson immediately put away his scrutinizing gaze, bowed, and assumed a welcoming posture.

“Welcome to our hotel, gentlemen.”

George narrowed his eyes and looked Wilson up and down.

“You are...?”

“I’m the new general manager, the nephew of the old innkeeper, Robert,” Wilson replied calmly and confidently.

George gave a slight nod without asking any further questions and entered the hotel lobby side by side with Attis.

As soon as they sat down, Lin Xiaoyang quickly approached with a tray and respectfully handed them the menu.

“Gentlemen, is there anything I can do for you?”

George was about to casually open the menu when he glanced at Lin Xiaoyang and suddenly stopped.

“Hmm? What are you doing here?”

Lin Xiaoyang was equally startled. He raised an eyebrow slightly.

“You’re... the gentleman who performed magic at the lakeside square yesterday?”

George chuckled. “That’s right. I didn’t expect you to be a server here.”

“Yes.”

George slowly extended his hand. “Pleased to meet you, young man.”

Lin Xiaoyang hesitated for a moment before politely shaking his hand. However, the instant George’s fingertips touched Xiaoyang’s pulse, his expression changed slightly. His eyes became deep and cold.

“This guy’s pulse... a pure-Yang constitution!?”

Although George still wore a smile on his face, a storm raged inside him. He calmly released Lin Xiaoyang’s hand, and a strange glint flashed in his eyes.

At that moment, a burst of lively applause rang out. In the center of the lobby, a man dressed as a clown was moving among the tables. While serving food, he imitated the calls of various birds, animals, and insects, entertaining the vampires until they burst into laughter.

George’s gaze swept over the clown, and he frowned.

“Why does this guy... look so familiar?”

Adornod noticed George watching him but continued his performance calmly, as though nothing unusual had happened.

However, this confrontation hidden beneath the surface had only just begun...

Suddenly, the hotel entrance was pushed open again, and a group of people filed inside.

At the front was a man wearing a long black cloak. He walked with steady steps, his eyes sharp as blades, a faint cold smile on his face. Wilson recognized him and quickly bowed.

“Welcome, my fellow supernatural friends.”

The newcomer was none other than Jack the Ripper.

Several followers walked behind him. Among them, the figure of a blonde Eastern girl made Lin Xiaoyang’s heart suddenly tighten.

“Hui-jun... No, Annie!”

He forced himself to suppress his excitement and tried to keep his voice steady.

“Welcome to our hotel, everyone.”

His gaze fell on Annie. But when their eyes met, there was not the slightest ripple of emotion on her face, as though she did not know him at all.

Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath, struggling to suppress the emotions surging inside him.

“Cocktails first,” Jack said casually after glancing at the menu. “Get this girl a Bloody Mary.”

Lin Xiaoyang’s fingertips trembled slightly. He knew very well that this night would be a silent battle.

### 55

Late at night, the lobby was brightly lit as a masquerade ball was taking place. More than a dozen couples danced gracefully on the dance floor. Nearly a hundred guests sat around them. Apart from Father John Chen and General Manager Wilson, hardly anyone realized that a battle between good and evil was about to begin.

Wilson signaled to the two servers at the entrance. They quietly closed the doors and locked them with steel bolts.

At that moment, the music suddenly stopped, leaving the ghosts bewildered. The Phantom Hand realized that they had fallen into a trap and exchanged a glance with Jack the Ripper.

Wilson walked onto the dance floor, removed his hat, and bowed.

“I am Wilson, the general manager of this hotel. My fellow friends from the supernatural world have come a long way. As your host, we should naturally have welcomed and entertained you. However, Princess Maria has given an order: anyone belonging to Anderson’s faction may not leave this place tonight unless they are willing to turn away from evil and come over to the light.”

As soon as he finished speaking, the ghosts looked at one another. Then they automatically split into two groups, clearly divided into opposing sides.

Qiu Shenzhi said, “Wilson, we don’t belong to Anderson’s faction. We don’t want to get dragged into the conflict between your two sides. Can we leave?”

Wilson replied, “Friends who do not belong to Anderson’s faction only need to take the Dragon Blood Pill in my hand. You’ll be able to leave shortly afterward.”

Qiu Shenzhi was displeased and demanded loudly, “Why do we have to take that pill? Is Princess Maria trying to control us with drugs?”

Wilson smiled. “After taking the Dragon Blood Pill, you won’t need to drink human blood anymore. You’ll be able to obtain the energy needed to sustain your bodies from ordinary food and drink.”

Qiu Shenzhi asked, “Are you saying that if we take this pill, we’ll no longer be vampires?”

Wilson said, “You misunderstood, Painter. After taking the pill, you’ll still be vampires, just like me. While the effects of the medicine last, you won’t need to drink human blood, and like humans, you’ll be able to come out and move around during the daytime.”

Qiu Shenzhi asked again, “I understand. Then how long do the effects of the medicine last?”

Wilson replied, “Four years. At this time four years from now, you’ll have to return here for an evaluation. Those who pass the evaluation will receive another Dragon Blood Pill from me.”

Qiu Shenzhi asked uneasily, “What circumstances would cause someone to fail this evaluation?”

Wilson remained calm.

“During these four years, if you join Anderson’s faction, you’ll fail the evaluation. If you drink human blood, the Dragon Blood Pill inside your body will turn into a deadly poison and immediately kill you.”

Qiu Shenzhi asked, “And what happens if we fail the evaluation and can’t take another Dragon Blood Pill?”

Wilson said, “Your body will rapidly age and then deteriorate and die.”

Qiu Shenzhi sneered disdainfully.

“Heh-heh! When you put it that way, aren’t you simply trying to control us with drugs?”

Wilson said, “You don’t have to look at it in the worst possible way. The Princess has made this requirement mainly to reduce conflicts between vampires and humans so that both sides can coexist peacefully.”

Jack, among the ghosts, gave several cold laughs.

“You certainly talk big. The only question is whether your abilities are as impressive as your words.”

In the dimly lit center of the dance floor, ghostly blue flames drifted and flickered, illuminating faces in the audience that were filled with either excitement or fear. Suddenly, a steady sound of footsteps rang out, breaking the whispers among the supernatural creatures.

“Slap!”

Father John Chen flung open his cloak. His mask fell to the ground, revealing a cold and resolute face. He slowly stepped onto the dance floor and reached into his clothing to take out a sinister cross made of human bone. Candlelight reflected off the ghostly remains, making the atmosphere even more eerie. He looked around, his voice low but powerful.

“This ghost brother has made a very practical point. I, John Chen, will let all of you see tonight what it means to subdue demons and vanquish ghosts.”

A wave of frightened whispers rose from the audience. Many of the ghost followers could not help taking a step backward, unmistakable fear appearing on their faces.

“John Chen?”

“He’s the one they call Ghostbane?”

Ghost Soldier A pointed at the Father with trembling fingers. His lips had gone pale, and his voice trembled.

“The man rumored to have slain countless evil spirits and struck terror throughout the supernatural world?”

A contemptuous cold laugh came from the side. A man dressed in a long black robe stepped forward, his eyes sharp as blades and a playful smile curling at the corners of his mouth. He was George, the Phantom Hand, a renowned master of the supernatural world.

He turned his head slightly and examined the Father like a hawk studying its prey.

“I’ve heard so much about you, Ghostbane. Now that I finally have the chance to meet you in person, let me see what you can do.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly flicked his sleeve. Several flashes of cold light shot out like a violent storm, heading straight for Father John Chen’s vital points. The sharp swords gleamed coldly as they traced deadly arcs through the air, like venomous snakes striking their prey.

Father John Chen, however, remained calm. He turned sideways to evade the attack, then flipped his left hand and lightly raised the human-bone cross. The flying swords seemed to be drawn by some invisible force. One after another, they struck the cross with several sharp metallic clangs and became firmly attached to it, unable to move.

George’s pupils contracted. Cold sweat appeared at his temples, and he cried out inwardly.

“This guy’s abilities really are unfathomable...”

The Father’s expression was cold and stern. He slowly tightened his hand, and the cross emitted a deep hum.

“George, the Phantom Hand, you have harmed countless people. Tonight, it is time for you to atone for your sins.”

George said nothing. The next second, his figure suddenly shifted and changed, as though a reflection on water had split apart. In an instant, more than a dozen Georges appeared simultaneously around the dance floor. Each held a different weapon—knives, swords, sickles, and long whips flashing in every direction. Phantom images swirled everywhere, making it impossible to tell which one was the real George.

“Come on. Let me see what you can do.”

More than a dozen figures simultaneously swung their weapons and attacked the Father from all directions. Their momentum was overwhelming, and murderous intent was unmistakable.

The Father slowly closed his eyes and raised the cross in his hand. He silently recited scripture. Then he suddenly opened his eyes, pushed off with one foot, and moved through the flashes of blades and swords like a gust of wind.

With a series of deafening cracking sounds, George’s phantom images disappeared one after another. His true body finally emerged, cold sweat pouring down his forehead.

Just as George was still in shock, a fierce killing intent suddenly came from behind.

“Whoosh!”

An extraordinarily sharp pair of steel shears swept through the air, flashing with cold light and heading straight for the back of the Father’s neck.

“Look out!”

Lin Xiaoyang’s cry rang throughout the entire dance floor.

Father John Chen spun around and quickly dodged to the side while raising the cross horizontally to block the attack, knocking the incoming steel shears away.

The attacker was none other than Jack the Ripper. He wielded blades in both hands, each move vicious. In one hand, he held steel shears designed to sever a person’s head; on the other hand, the five fingers of his other hand transformed into surgical knives, stabbing directly toward his opponent’s heart.

George and Jack joined forces, attacking from both sides, their ghostly figures crossing and weaving as every move carried murderous intent.

At first, Father John Chen focused on defense while looking for opportunities to attack. As time passed, however, he gradually figured out the two ghosts’ attack patterns and began to counterattack. His cross moved like an arrow released from a bow, shifting from defense to offense, every strike aimed directly at his opponents’ openings.

“Bang!”

George took a heavy kick to the chest and went rolling backward more than a dozen steps. His face turned pale, and blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

“Boom!”

Jack was forced into a corner. The Father’s fists came down like a violent storm. Jack could not keep up with the attacks and was beaten until blood sprayed from his mouth, leaving him barely able to stand.

Just then, a slender figure suddenly rushed into the battle.

“Don’t!”

Annie threw herself in front of Jack without hesitation. The Father abruptly pulled back his fist, but he was still a step too late. Annie was struck in the chest by a sacred implement. Several of her ribs shattered instantly, and blood poured from her mouth. She staggered backward and finally collapsed into Jack’s arms, her breathing faint.

“Hui-jun!”

Lin Xiaoyang rushed forward and painfully lifted the barely conscious Annie into his arms. Tears burst from his eyes. He gritted his teeth, his voice trembling.

“Why did you have to be so foolish... Hui-jun...”

The dance floor fell into complete silence.

The Father turned around and looked coldly at George and Jack.

“Now, taking your lives would be as easy as lifting a finger. Do you want to die, or do you want to live? You choose.”

Jack was seriously wounded and could barely speak, but his eyes remained resolute.

“I cannot betray the Duke... Brother, I’ll go ahead. I’ll wait for you in hell...”

Before he finished speaking, he raised the steel shears and, without hesitation, severed the bones of his own neck.

“Crack!”

His head rolled to the ground, blood spraying everywhere. All the ghost followers around them were horrified.

George remained silent for a long time. Finally, he slowly nodded.

“I am willing to retire from the supernatural world...”

The Father’s gaze was sharp.

“Destroy your own martial arts abilities and解除 your magic.”

George sighed softly and raised his hand to sever his own tendons. Blood dripped onto the floor.

“Let’s go...” George said quietly to his follower, Attis.

Wilson stepped forward and handed him a pill.

“The Dragon Blood Pill. You can leave only after taking it.”

George said nothing. He took the pill, swallowed it, and then left with Attis supporting him.

In the dance floor, Anderson’s followers looked at one another. Then, one after another, they rushed to declare their allegiance.

“I’m willing to pledge allegiance to the Princess...”

At this point, the battle had been completely turned around, and the outcome was decided.

### 56

Lin Xiaoyang held Annie tightly as he staggered toward Room 504 and pushed open the door. His footsteps were unsteady, and his heart pounded like a drum. He gently laid her on the bed, his trembling fingertips softly stroking her pale face. Annie’s breathing was weak, like a flickering candle in the wind, ready to go out at any moment.

He knelt beside the bed, tightly holding her cold hand, his eyes filled with tears.

“No... You can’t...” His voice trembled. Tears slipped down his face and fell onto her pale forehead. He desperately wished he could do something, even if it meant giving his own life in exchange for a chance to save hers.

Suddenly, the mural on the wall trembled slightly, and a halo of light emerged from the canvas. As the scenery within the painting twisted and distorted, a figure slowly stepped out. The old painter Huang Lihua, dressed in a long robe and holding a paintbrush, appeared in the room like a figure from a dream.

“Xiaoyang.”

Huang Lihua’s voice was low, carrying the weariness of the years. His eyes fell on Annie lying on the bed, and his brows knitted tightly.

“This girl is far too badly injured.”

Lin Xiaoyang raised his head, tears still wet on his face. His voice was choked with emotion.

“Elder... You can save her, right?”

Huang Lihua slowly shook his head, his tone solemn.

“I’m sorry. I don’t have that ability. But Xiaoyang, you have to tell me first. What is your relationship with her? Why are you so determined to save her?”

Lin Xiaoyang lowered his eyes. The fist he had clenched had turned white.

“She... disappeared for two years. I’ve been looking for her for two years.” He took a deep breath, his throat tightening. “She’s my girlfriend... How could I give up?”

A complicated emotion flashed through Huang Lihua’s eyes. He sighed.

“Oh? Then what about my granddaughter Minhua? Are you planning to betray her?”

Lin Xiaoyang froze and painfully closed his eyes. He knew how Minhua felt about him, but now...

“Elder, please forgive me. I can’t think about that right now...”

Huang Lihua quietly watched him for a long time before finally speaking.

“What is love, that it moves the whole world... Xiaoyang, perhaps there is someone who can save her.”

Lin Xiaoyang suddenly raised his head, a faint glimmer of hope burning in his eyes.

“Who?”

“Princess Maria.”

“Take me to see her!”

Lin Xiaoyang immediately stood up.

Huang Lihua raised a hand to stop him.

“You don’t need to go. The Princess will save her. But she can only repair Annie’s body. She cannot解除 the spell placed on her.”

“The spell?” Lin Xiaoyang frowned, uneasiness rising in his heart. “What will happen if the spell isn’t解除?”

“She won’t recover her memories.”

Huang Lihua’s words struck Lin Xiaoyang’s heart like a heavy hammer.

Lin Xiaoyang murmured softly, “Then... does that mean I have to ask Duke Anderson for help?”

Huang Lihua gave a cold laugh, a trace of mockery flashing in his eyes.

“Do you really think the Duke would help you for no reason?”

Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath, his gaze resolute.

“Even if he wants me to exchange my life for hers, I’m willing.”

Huang Lihua’s expression grew heavy.

“Child, that is simply what you want to believe. The Duke is an evil demon. Do you really think he will keep his promise?”

Lin Xiaoyang clenched his fists, his voice low.

“Then what should I do? Is there any other way?”

Huang Lihua pondered for a moment before slowly speaking.

“There is. If you can send the Duke back to hell, her spell will disappear.”

“You mean... I have to kill the Duke?”

“No.” Huang Lihua’s tone was firm, his eyes blazing. “No one can kill the Duke. Not even you or the Princess. But you can send him back to hell and leave him under Satan’s control.”

Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath, his fists trembling slightly.

“I understand... But can I really do it?”

Huang Lihua looked directly into his eyes and slowly nodded.

“You can. This mission belongs to you.”

Lin Xiaoyang closed his eyes. After a moment, he opened them again, determination burning in his gaze.

“All right! To bring Hui-jun back, I’m willing to fight the Duke.”

Huang Lihua said nothing more. He raised his paintbrush and gently waved it. Annie’s body on the bed slowly floated into the air and drifted toward the mural.

“Remember, never, ever negotiate with the devil.”

His voice was low and stern.

Lin Xiaoyang watched as Annie’s figure gradually merged into the mural until the last trace of her graceful silhouette disappeared completely.

The room fell silent once again, leaving only the burning determination surging in his heart.
