[Eighteen] The Black Bat Army Mobilizes in Force

## 64

At midnight, the great square of Bat Castle looked especially eerie beneath the dark purple moonlight. A cold wind swept across the square, sending the flags flying, while the sound of clashing armor was especially clear in the silent night.

Anderson stood on the command platform, his black-obsidian armor gleaming with a cold sheen in the torchlight. His gaze was as sharp as a blade as it swept across the entire Black Bat army. The soldiers stood in orderly ranks, their black capes fluttering in the night wind like a surging mass of dark clouds.

“My brothers and sisters!” Anderson’s deep yet powerful voice echoed across the square. “The moment of the final battle has arrived. We have no choice! This is a fight to the death. There is no retreat, only advance! Only victory can prove our existence!”

His voice shook the crowd like a war drum. The soldiers roared in unison, bloodthirsty fervor flashing in their eyes.

Anderson slowly walked down from the command platform and personally handed two black, gleaming command flags to White Wolf and Black Bear.

“White Wolf, Black Bear, this operation is in your hands. Three hundred men on the left flank and three hundred on the right. Hide by day and move by night. Leave no survivors.”

White Wolf took the command flag, a cold smile curling at the corners of his mouth, and dropped to one knee. “Yes, General!”

Black Bear nodded heavily, gripping the command flag tightly in both hands, his fighting spirit soaring.

Not long afterward, the three Black Bat forces quietly left the city. They crossed the dark waters by ship and headed straight for the Italian Peninsula.

The night hung low. Naples was like a sleeping beast, its streets silent, broken only by the occasional bark of a dog or the sound of the wind slicing through the night sky. Yet on this night, death quietly descended.

“Ahhh!”

A shrill scream came from the entrance of an alley. A man stumbled out, clutching his neck with both hands as blood gushed through his fingers like a spring. His eyes rolled back, and his body convulsed as he collapsed to the ground.

Two dark figures slowly emerged from the alley. Their red pupils glimmered in the darkness, and blood stained the corners of their mouths. Their capes swayed gently in the night wind, and their tall figures were as ghostly as specters.

A police car stopped at the entrance to the street, its headlights casting a ghastly white light.

“Help! Please help us!”

Several terrified citizens ran desperately toward the police car.

Officer A and Officer B quickly got out of the vehicle, their alert eyes scanning the surroundings.

An elderly man tremblingly pointed toward the entrance of the alley. His voice broke with fear.

“Officers! There! They—they’re vampires! They’re biting people!”

A woman covered her face and sobbed, her voice trembling. “They bite everyone they see... We have to get out of here!”

Officer A and Officer B exchanged a glance, quickly drew their pistols, and took defensive positions.

“Brother, I’ll report this to the precinct first.”

Officer A pulled out his radio. “0830 calling the precinct. This is the entrance to 19th Street! Citizens are under attack. We have witnessed—vampires! Requesting backup!”

Inside the precinct, alarms rang out, and the operations center was brightly lit.

“Vampires have also appeared on 12th Street!”

Chief Giacomo looked grim and slammed his hand onto the desk. “Everyone, this is a planned attack! We must act immediately!”

He turned and issued orders.

“Antonio, order all police cars to broadcast a warning and tell citizens to take shelter at the nearest safe location!”

“Tacito, recall all officers who are currently on leave immediately!”

“Sandro, have the criminal tactical unit carry rifles and grenade launchers, with one officer assigned to each police car. Conduct a fan-shaped search. If you encounter a vampire—kill without hesitation!”

The officers quickly acknowledged their orders and moved into action.

At the entrance to 19th Street, the night grew heavier.

Two police officers crouched at the corner of the street, the cold seeping from their fingertips into their bones. A vampire slowly approached, the blood at the corner of its mouth gleaming with an eerie red light.

“Get ready!” Officer A whispered, gripping his pistol tightly. Cold sweat appeared on his forehead.

“Fire!”

Gunshots tore through the night sky. Bullets struck the vampire’s body, and green blood splattered across the ground. The vampire staggered slightly, yet continued advancing step by step.

“Damn it! Shoot it in the head!” Officer A shouted.

The gunshots rang out again. The bullets pierced straight through the vampire’s eyes, and black smoke poured from the wounds. The monster finally stopped and leaned against the wall, gasping for breath.

Officer A slowly stepped forward, his gun aimed at the vampire’s head, while Officer B watched it closely from the side.

Suddenly, the vampire lunged at Officer A. A pair of sharp claws instantly plunged into his chest!

“Ahhh!”

Blood sprayed through the air. Officer A convulsed in agony, yet still gritted his teeth and pulled the trigger.

Officer B’s hands trembled as he fired several shots at the back of the vampire’s head.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The vampire’s head exploded. Its headless body collapsed, crushing Officer A beneath it.

Officer B fell to his knees, gasping for breath. Tears blurred his vision as he stared at his fallen partner.

“Senior...”

Blood trickled from the corner of Officer A’s mouth. He opened it slightly but could no longer make a sound. The light had faded from his eyes, and the pistol he had been gripping tightly slipped to the ground.

Officer B tremblingly closed his eyes, then took a deep breath and raised his gun again.

The night remained dark and heavy, while the battle had only just begun.

## 65

Night hung low over Florence, also known as Firenze, which was shrouded in an eerie silence. Few pedestrians could be seen on the streets. Only the red and blue emergency lights of police cars illuminated the ancient stone walls, their shifting reflections moving like ghosts.

The voice of a loudspeaker inside a police car echoed in a low and urgent tone through the silent streets:

“Citizens, for your own safety, unless absolutely necessary, please return home immediately and avoid remaining on the streets, so that you do not fall victim to vampire attacks. Citizens...”

In the distance, jeeps and military vehicles roared into the city. Their oppressive engines tore through the night sky. Fully armed army personnel stood on high alert with their weapons ready, their sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.

At the street corner, temporary barricades gleamed with a cold metallic sheen in the dim light. The cannons of armored vehicles remained dark and silent, like sleeping beasts.

“Stop! Identification papers!”

A Marine officer wearing body armor raised his arm and stopped a black sedan. His voice was stern, his eyes sharp, and the rifle in his hands was held firmly against his chest.

The trembling driver handed over his identification papers. The officer stared at his face for a moment before nodding toward the checkpoint.

“Let him through.”

Meanwhile, the city government building was brightly lit. An intense atmosphere of anxiety filled the offices. Maps, documents, and military intelligence reports covered the desks, while several aides spoke quietly and constantly updated information came through their earpieces.

Mayor Ivano stood gravely at the conference table, his fingers gripping its edge as his gaze swept across everyone in the room.

“Naples was attacked by an organized vampire terror attack last night. As soon as I received the news, I immediately issued a martial-law order this morning. We cannot sit back and wait for death. We must make every possible preparation.”

General Duccio crossed his arms and nodded slightly, his tone decisive.

“Mayor, I have ordered the armored units to completely seal off the surrounding roads. Anyone and any vehicle entering or leaving the city must be checked, without exception.”

Chief Fabio frowned deeply, both hands pressed against the table. His voice was low.

“These vampires are cunning and bizarre, and they can slip through anywhere. They are skilled at hiding, and their movements are unpredictable. If they really manage to infiltrate the city... we may find it extremely difficult to defend against them.”

General Duccio curled his lips into a reassuring smile and patted Fabio on the shoulder.

“Chief, you don’t need to be so pessimistic. With the military and police working together, even if they get inside, I’ll make sure they never leave alive!”

“General,” Ivano said in a steady tone, though there was a hint of warning in his voice, “these vampires are not ordinary terrorists. They are not afraid of bullets, and they are extremely difficult to deal with. I just spoke with Bishop Mario on the phone, and he warned us—the ordinary priests cannot even do anything to these vampires.”

The office fell silent for a moment. Outside the window came the distant roar of military vehicles. The night wind stirred the curtains, bringing a trace of coolness.

Ivano slowly exhaled and folded his hands on the table. His voice was deep.

“The enemy is in the shadows, while we are in the open. The only thing we can do right now is prepare for battle and stand by, using stillness to counter movement.”

The atmosphere in the conference room was heavy. Everyone knew clearly that this would be a hard battle.

The real nightmare had only just begun...

## 66

The night was deep and heavy. Inside the Holy See’s great hall in Vatican City, Rome, the lights were blazing. Heavy red velvet curtains blocked out the darkness outside, while candlelight cast wavering shadows across the magnificent gilded ceiling.

The entire reception hall was filled with an oppressive atmosphere. Even the sacred images on the walls seemed to be listening in silence.

Pope Novum Paul sat at the head of the long table. His silver-white hair carried a faint glow beneath the candlelight. His gaze was deep as he slowly looked around at the several cardinals seated before him and Father Stylon standing nearby.

His voice was steady yet carried an authority that could not be ignored.

“Everyone has probably heard the news. Anderson’s vampire army has been attacking cities one after another. The entire country of Italy is now gripped by fear, and every citizen is living in anxiety.”

Cardinal A put down the Bible in his hands and folded both hands on the table, his brows tightly furrowed.

“This is clearly a planned series of attacks. They are targeting civilians, forcing the military, the police, and our Church to spread ourselves too thin and run from place to place.”

“But I’m afraid the matter is not that simple.”

Father Stylon stood beside the table, his palm gently brushing along its edge, his eyes sharp and focused. He deliberately paused for a moment, waiting until everyone’s attention had turned toward him before slowly speaking.

“Who, after all, is Anderson’s greatest enemy? Perhaps we should consider the situation from that perspective.”

Bishop B frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. His tone carried a hint of suspicion.

“Stylon, if you have something to say, just say it.”

The Pope’s gaze sharpened as if he had already realized something. In a low voice, he said, “Are you referring to... Princess Maria?”

The corners of Stylon’s mouth lifted slightly, as though he had been waiting for this question.

“Exactly.”

He nodded gently and continued, “Not long ago, my senior fellow disciple, Father John Chen, went to Switzerland at Maria’s request. I suspect that in the Dark World, the two major powers of Maria and Anderson have moved from their former state of open hostility into a moment of full confrontation.”

The Pope lightly tapped his fingers on the table, signaling him to continue.

Stylon took a deep breath and said solemnly, “Although Anderson has created chaos in several cities, have you noticed one detail? They have not directly attacked our churches in various places. What does this mean? He is not targeting the Church, at least not yet. The real reason, I fear, is that he does not want to fight both Maria and us at the same time and end up caught between two enemies.”

Bishop B pondered for a moment and slowly nodded.

“Your analysis does make sense... If Anderson wants to monopolize control of the Dark World, he must first eliminate Maria.”

“Exactly.” Stylon’s voice became even lower. “Anderson has sent all his elite forces into battle this time in order to force Maria to commit her main forces. If he successfully wipes out Maria’s Iron-Blooded Imperial Guards, then the only force left capable of opposing him will be us, the Church. And when that happens...”

“We will become his next target.”

The Pope’s tone was firm, and a trace of deep thought showed between his brows. He slowly rose and looked intently at Stylon.

“Princess Maria is the only balancing force in the Dark World, and she has been our ally for a long time. We cannot stand by and watch her come under attack by Anderson. Father Stylon.”

“Yes, Your Holiness.”

Stylon dropped to one knee and bowed his head as he listened.

“Immediately gather the elite clergy within the Church and organize an exorcist army. On the one hand, assist the local governments in eliminating Anderson’s minions. On the other, support Princess Maria in confronting Anderson’s main forces. We cannot allow the Dark World to fall into dictatorship and bloodshed.”

Stylon raised his head, his eyes blazing with determination.

“I swear to complete the mission, even if it costs me my life!”

The Pope nodded, his expression solemn as he looked toward the bishops.

“May the Lord protect us.”
