[4] Huang Lihua's Warning

[4] Huang Lihua's Warning

10

Lin Xiaoyang walked into a modest hotel. The air was filled with the smell of disinfectant and old wooden floors. He went to the front desk to check in, gently set down his leather bag, and, with somewhat stiff fingers, took the key while unconsciously concealing the exhaustion he felt inside. The woman at the front desk smiled and said goodbye to him. Xiaoyang returned a simple smile without saying much and turned to go upstairs.

As he climbed the stairs, the sound of his footsteps on the wooden boards echoed through the quiet hallway, like a shadow following his every step. He arrived at the room he had reserved and pushed open the old wooden door. The paint on the door had already faded, making it look somewhat worn. The room was dimly lit, with only a table lamp in the corner giving off a faint glow. After entering, Xiaoyang casually placed his luggage on the table, then took off his coat and tossed his shoes aside. His exhausted body seemed to relax completely at that moment, while a trace of deep thought flickered in his eyes.

He walked into the washroom and turned on the faucet. Water splashed loudly, and there were some water stains on the white walls. His reflection appeared in the mirror, with a hint of confusion in his eyes. As he brushed his teeth, his gaze remained fixed on his reflection, as though he were talking to himself, yet also questioning himself. His thoughts began to drift away as he recalled everything that had happened over the past three days, and his mind gradually became more confused.

“Why was Huang Lihua so anxious to make me leave the Paradise Hotel? There must be something going on that I don't know about.” He gently bit down on his toothbrush, and a bitter smile unconsciously appeared at the corners of his mouth. The anxious expression on Huang Lihua's face appeared in his mind, as though some major event had been forcing him to leave that place. But no matter how much he thought about it, the reason still did not seem quite right.

“I'll go back tomorrow and find out the truth.” He looked at himself in the mirror, his gaze becoming resolute. The water he used to rinse his mouth flowed into the drain with the sound of gargling, washing away the confusion he had felt moments earlier, along with some of his uneasiness. Yet the doubt in his heart did not completely disappear. Instead, it became even clearer.

He dried his face and gently touched his cheek. Then he said to himself, “Tomorrow, I'll have an answer.”

At that moment, he knew that all his questions and uneasiness would find their answers tomorrow, and that he also had to prepare himself to face the truths he could never have foreseen.

### 11

In the basement of Paradise Inn, dim lights hung from the ceiling, illuminating several cold, rigid iron pillars. Huang Lihua's hands and feet were tightly bound with chains between two of the pillars, leaving his body hanging stiffly between them. The air was filled with dampness and decay, and patches of mold could be seen all over the walls. Robert, the innkeeper, stood before him with a cruel smile on his face. Beside him, several ghost soldiers stood rigidly, holding restraints in their hands, their sinister eyes making them look as though they were ready to attack at any moment.

Robert straightened up, his low voice filled with menace. “Huang Lihua, do you know what mistake you made?”

Huang Lihua remained calm. He slowly raised his head, a hint of defiance in his eyes, and pretended not to understand. “What exactly did I do wrong?”

Robert sneered and pointed a finger at him, his tone growing even colder. “You really know how to play dumb! First, you should never have brought that Chinese young man into the Dark World. Second, you should never have warned him to leave this place.”

Huang Lihua smiled faintly, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly. There was a hint of contempt in his voice. “Old Innkeeper, you're clearly trying to pin a crime on me! Do you have some kind of prejudice against me?”

Robert's expression darkened. He stepped closer to Huang Lihua, his gaze as sharp as a blade. “Maybe I do! You have been living at the hotel as a freeloader, relying on the leader's trust and favor. I've disliked you for a long time. Tell me, what is your relationship with that Chinese young man?”

Huang Lihua understood the prejudice Robert held against him. This time, Robert had finally caught him with something he could use against him, and Huang Lihua had already prepared himself for the worst possible outcome. He raised his head slightly and answered calmly, “All right. That young man is my granddaughter's husband.”

Robert nodded slightly after hearing this, then continued questioning him. “I accept that answer. Then why did you bring him into the Dark World? That clearly violates the prohibition!”

Huang Lihua shrugged lightly, his tone showing that he did not consider it a big deal. “It's nothing. I was simply satisfying his curiosity.”

Robert's expression became even more severe. He crossed his arms over his chest, his gaze stabbing toward Huang Lihua like a steel blade. “Is that so? That answer doesn't convince me.”

Huang Lihua shrugged and gave a mocking smile, helplessness in his eyes. “Believe it or not, it's up to you.”

Robert stared intently at him and said coldly, “You have violated the prohibition. I must act according to the rules, strip you of your freedom of movement, and send a report back to headquarters to await the leader's decision. Someone, bring me the spell seal.”

A ghost soldier standing nearby immediately obeyed. He quickly brought over a black ebony box. The lid slowly opened, releasing a chilling aura. Robert coldly grabbed Huang Lihua by the hair and suddenly pressed the black stone seal against his forehead.

As a strange force coursed through him, the expression gradually disappeared from Huang Lihua's face. His entire face became rigid, and from head to toe, his body gradually turned as cold and emotionless as a stone sculpture.

Robert gave the order coldly. “Dress this guy up so he won't attract the tourists' attention. Take him to the sculpture garden and wait for the decision.”

Several ghost soldiers immediately responded. They lifted Huang Lihua's body and dragged him toward the underground passage, his limbs stiff as they moved. His figure gradually disappeared into the dark corner.

### 12

Lin Xiaoyang stopped the motorhome again and stared at the mysterious and solemn entrance to Paradise Inn. His heartbeat grew increasingly rapid inside his chest. His curiosity burned like a blazing fire, driving him deeper into the unknown.

The morning air outside was fresh, and white mist drifted between the earth and sky like a veil. The sunlight had just begun to emerge from the clouds, gently falling over the sculpture garden. Light flickered across the sculptures, as though whispering some secret.

Dense green grass surrounded the area. The dew had not yet evaporated, and the air was filled with the fresh scent of earth and grass. Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath, pulled his coat tighter around himself, and lightly stepped along the damp path toward the depths of the grounds.

He passed through a tangle of flowers and weeds when his eyes suddenly caught a familiar figure—the sculpture of Huang Lihua standing in a dark corner.

The flowers and plants around it had already withered and yellowed. No one had tended them, making the area look somewhat desolate. The sculpture was life-sized, but its finely detailed carving was full of vitality, as though a real artist were emerging from the stone, ready to begin creating. Strangely, the sculpture seemed untouched by the passage of time. Its surface had an unusual freshness, as though it had only just been moved here.

Lin Xiaoyang crouched down and reached out to lightly touch the base of the sculpture with his finger. A subtle warmth traveled through the cold stone surface. His fingertip unconsciously paused, as though he had touched some hidden power.

“This sculpture must have been erected here only recently, perhaps even last night,” he murmured, his gaze becoming increasingly focused.

He stood up and carefully examined every detail of the sculpture, especially Huang Lihua's clothing—the slightly worn robe, with a little dust on it, was exactly the same one he had seen Huang Lihua wearing with his own eyes the previous evening.

The sculpture seemed to be holding a palette in one hand, with a paintbrush between its teeth, while its other hand rested casually behind its back, as though it were ready at any moment to release its creative inspiration.

Lin Xiaoyang's heartbeat quickened. A voice inside him told him that everything was about to reveal a tremendous secret.

Following yesterday's instructions, he walked around to the back of the sculpture. The moment he lowered his head, the sight before him left him completely frozen.

The hand that had originally been clenched into a fist was now slowly opening. Three lines of writing were clearly visible in its palm, with a miniature roll of film placed underneath.

“This... is incredible!” Lin Xiaoyang exclaimed softly.

He almost crouched down as he stared at the three lines of writing, murmuring, “Lin Xiaoyang, April 13, 2002.”

He froze, his heart jolting. “Isn't this the name and date I wrote in his palm yesterday?”

His breathing became rapid. His eyes quickly scanned the words that followed, and his heart felt as though something were tearing it apart.

The line read: “Leave this dangerous place immediately. The hotel staff are all vampires.”

A chill passed through Lin Xiaoyang's heart. He took a deep breath and said quietly, “I knew it... So it really is true.”

Then the third line in the palm caught his attention:

“Take the film with you and make my work known to the world.”

Lin Xiaoyang's hand trembled slightly. At that moment, he understood that Huang Lihua's final request was for him to take these works away and reveal the truth to the world.

He lowered his head and murmured, “I understand. Huang Lihua wanted me to come back so that I could take his work away and let more people see it.”

The moment he picked up the miniature roll of film from Huang Lihua's palm, a warm sensation traveled through his own palm. Lin Xiaoyang clearly felt that the warmth was almost identical to the sensation he had felt when shaking hands with Huang Lihua the day before.

When his fingers touched the film, he suddenly felt a surge of emotion. The invisible connection between him and Huang Lihua seemed to have grown stronger at that very moment.

Just as he was about to turn and leave the sculpture, he could not help looking back at it once more.

Something strange happened—the corners of the sculpture's mouth lifted slightly, and the paintbrush held between its teeth slipped down with a light breeze, gently falling to the ground.

At that moment, Lin Xiaoyang seemed to see Huang Lihua's soul, silently expressing an unfinished wish through that brief change of expression.

Lin Xiaoyang took a deep breath and said quietly, “My dear elder, I will bring your work back into the light of day! Thank you for sacrificing yourself to save me.”

Before his words had even faded, determination had already lit up his eyes. He turned and began walking back.

Every step was paving the way for the adventure that was about to begin, and he knew that all of this was only the beginning.

### 13

Lin Xiaoyang stepped into a photo shop. A small bell rang softly, and the room carried a faint fragrance mixed with the smell of photographic chemicals. The light was dim and yellowish, and a little dust floated in the air.

He walked up to the counter and looked at the shopkeeper with a polite smile, holding the roll of film in his hand.

He spoke softly, his eyes focused and carrying a hint of anticipation. “Sir, this is the roll of film. Please develop the photographs and make slides from them.”

His tone was calm but firm.

The shopkeeper looked down at the roll of film, then raised his eyes and nodded. “Certainly. When would you like to come back for the photographs and slides?”

Lin Xiaoyang smiled slightly, reached into his pocket, took out a business card, and handed it over. “Please call me when they're ready. This is my phone number.”

The shopkeeper accepted the business card, curiosity in his eyes. He then picked up the pickup slip beside him, placed it on the counter, and said, “All right. Please sign here.”

Lin Xiaoyang quickly filled in his name in English and handed the pickup slip back to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper tore off the receipt portion and handed it to him, smiling as he said, “Thank you. We'll notify you when everything is ready.”

Lin Xiaoyang accepted the receipt, nodded lightly, and walked out of the photo shop. The glass door behind him gave a faint jingle.

His steps were light and rhythmic. He slung the camera case over one shoulder, hung a digital camera around his neck, and rode his bicycle toward the shore of Lake Lucerne.

The scent of spring filled the air. Flowers of every kind were blooming in competition with one another, while two families on the grass quietly enjoyed this moment of peace.

Several children were playing on the lawn. A girl waved a colorful little pinwheel in her hand, while a boy happily played with a bamboo dragonfly.

Lin Xiaoyang stopped his bicycle, lightly touching the ground with the tip of his foot as he came to a steady stop.

He quickly picked up his camera and took several photographs of the innocent children. The sound of the shutter echoed through the quiet afternoon air.

He then smiled and waved gently to the two families before saying goodbye.

“Have a wonderful day!” he called out.

As he started riding again, Lin Xiaoyang continued lightly along the path beside Lake Lucerne.

In the distance, the Reuss River divided the city into the newer part of town and the Old Town, while the buildings on both banks unfolded like a beautiful painting.

He arrived at the famous Kapellbrücke, or Chapel Bridge. Its wooden structure was old and steeped in history. The water beneath the bridge was calm, while waterbirds and swans floated leisurely across its surface.

Lin Xiaoyang stopped from time to time, pointing his camera toward the graceful creatures on the lake and pressing the shutter to capture each moment.

The light and shadows on the lake shifted constantly, and the wings of the waterbirds shimmered in the sunlight. The beauty of that moment would remain forever inside his camera.

“It's so beautiful...” Lin Xiaoyang murmured, his eyes shining with an endless affection for the city.
